New ace alert

As a commenter Charlie suggested, Shawn Hill is “of course” the new ace of this staff.

In fact, Hill’s numbers are so good – 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA, 20 K (only 8 BB) – he, at this point, doesn’t even deserve the quotation marks. He is the ace. Congratulations Shawn Hill!

Now don’t screw it up. Jason Bergmann isn’t that far behind.

Yeah, me!

Anyway, I hope he stays good more than half a season.

Too bad Shawn could hold out for more than a couple of weeks. What a bummer.

Well, at least the other starters seem to be coming around. Especially now that the bats are picking up too! Good to see Zimmy swinging the bat well. Nice.

A sweep of Florida! Ain't that cool! Plus we no longer have the worst record! Woo hoo!

(Anyway, does any one know what has happened to Mr. NatsBad???)

Yeah, maybe the Nats are looking pretty pathetic so far, but maybe we can still salvage something good from this season....

See: www.thiscouldbetheyear.net

Yes, I'm guilty of posting this link to a bunch of different Nats blogs. But i read the proposal a few days ago, and it seems like something that's worth supporting. (It's an open letter to Nats owner Ted Lerner.)

And no, this isn't guerrila marketing by the Nats or anyone else who could make a buck off this. I'm just a fan who stumbled on what looks like a good idea.

Thanks for whatever you can do to talk this up.

Some good close games and decent pitching. The Nats are giving us hope as Boswell says -

Is anyone still out there reading this? I don't think so.

The Nationals are currently 66-83, a .443 and NOT in last place in the NL East. Florida and Houston have a worse record than the Nats. Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Kansas City and Chicago have a worse record than the Nats. They are NOT the worst team in baseball. Nobody's posted to this blog in a long time. I wonder why?

The 2007 Nationals have swept the Mets in NYC to exceed the win total of ’06 and everyone’s expectations. They have won new respect from writers, analysts, and opposing players and fans. It is a great accomplishment, but who among even the most optimistic Washington fans can say they saw this coming? And what exactly did they see? Did they see John Patterson and Nick Johnson never contributing a thing all season? Did they see Dimitri Young anchoring the batting order while Ryan Zimmerman and everyone else slumped? Manny Acta’s great job in the dugout was foretold by the sages, but no one could have written the script for this season as it unfolded.

How did we get to this unforeseen high ground in what was supposed to be a flood? It certainly started the way the scribes predicted. The Nationals were outscored by a wide margin in April, May and June and were it not for surprisingly good pitching from Bergmann, Hill, and the bullpen, the team might not have survived. But in July the Nationals outscored their opponents 106-103 as the pitching brought opponents down to the level of the awakening offense.

The Nats finished with 73 wins, 89 losses and 4th place in the NL East. Not the worst team in baseball.
